But what should you be doing when you are eating in a Thai restaurant in Singapore? If you are looking forward to a more memorable dining experience, then here are some tips you may find handy:

  1. Don’t go by yourself.

One thing about Thai cooking is that food is made and served not to the delight of a single person, but for a big group. So yes, don’t be surprised if the food you orders is given in a rather generous serving. This is because as per tradition, food is meant to be shared to everyone, and not only by an individual.

If you intend to go for Thai food on your own however, you may want to bring someone with you so you can share the meal, or find a restaurant that offers ala carte single-served dishes (which is relatively rare).

  1. Thai food has four categories.

In Thai cuisine, food is divided into four distinct categories: wet, dry, yum, and spicy. Wet categories include soup or curry, as these are dishes that are heavy in liquid base. Wet Thai food come in different variants, such as the famous Tom Yum soup, noodle soups, and curries of different colours and styles.

The dry category meanwhile consists of stir-fried food, or dishes that are not served in a bowl. This means the food was prepared without a sauce or soup base, and was cooked by means of frying or sautéing.

The yum category on the other hand refers to salads. Salads in Thai cuisine are a mix of fruit and vegetables, with different toppings included. Most Thai salads are zesty, but they may also be infused with different herbs and spices, and thus give off rather extreme flavours.

Lastly, Thai food also has a spicy category-this not only consists of curry, but also of other dishes that are mixed with chilli peppers and other spicy herbs, and these dishes may either be cooked dry, wet, or in salad form.

  1. Eat simultaneously.

Compared to other cuisines wherein the food should be consumed based on a scheduled series of servings, in Thai dining you can eat simultaneously once the first dish. In fact, there is no particular order as to which dish should be served first, as the aim here is for the guests to eat and fill satisfied at the soonest possible time.

You may be served with soup first, followed by noodles, then the entrees and rice, and the dessert. Sometimes you may even be provided with all your orders at once, and upon arrival you may start consuming them.

  1. Try to taste the vegetables too.

While Thai restaurants in Singapore usually feature meat, fish, and seafood dishes (as well as Thai staples such as tom yum, and pad Thai), it is also recommended to try their spring rolls and other vegetable meals. This is because Thais also know how to blend in different fruity and veggie flavours together, and you may find yourself enjoying them too.

Do note that Thai food may be overwhelming in terms of spicy taste, so having a salad at bay comes in handy; their zesty vibe serves as a great complement to the usually spicy, savoury, and tangy flavours of the entrees.
